To change your TikTok username, tap Profile, tap Edit profile, tap Username, enter the new one and tap Save. You can do this once every 30 days, and your new username must be 2 to 24 characters using only letters, numbers, underscores and periods. Your profile link changes with it, so update anywhere you have shared the old one.

Change your username in the TikTok app

These are TikTok's own steps, and they are the same on iPhone and Android.

  1. Tap Profile at the bottom.
  2. Tap Edit profile.
  3. Tap Username and enter the username you want.
  4. Tap Save.

If Save doesn't go through, the name may be taken, breaks one of the rules below, or you changed it less than 30 days ago.

Change it on a computer

You can also do it on tiktok.com in a desktop browser.

  1. Go to tiktok.com and log in.
  2. Click your profile picture in the upper corner.
  3. Select View Profile.
  4. Click Edit profile.
  5. Click your username.
  6. Enter the new username you want to use.

TikTok says this isn't available on TikTok Mobile Web, meaning tiktok.com opened in your phone's browser. On a phone, use the app.

The rules your new username has to follow

TikTok's username help page lists these rules:

RuleWhat TikTok says
How oftenOnce every 30 days
Length2 to 24 characters
Allowed charactersLetters, numbers, underscores and periods
PeriodsAllowed, but not at the end
AvailabilityCan't be taken, or held by a suspended or deactivated account
RestrictionsNot possible while you are blocked from updating your profile

A few things trip people up:

  • The 30 days start from your last change. If you rename and immediately regret it, you wait out the full period before trying again. Pick carefully.
  • Released names aren't free right away. When you give up a username, TikTok says it can't be added to any account for a short period of time. That includes yours, so you can't instantly switch back to it.
  • Names held by suspended or deactivated accounts may not become available immediately.
  • Verified accounts are pointed to TikTok support to change their username. In the app, go to Profile, the Menu button at the top, Settings and privacy, Help Center, then Chat with us.

When the rules check out but it still won't save

If your new username follows every rule and you are past the 30 days, the problem may be the app itself. TikTok's own troubleshooting steps are:

  1. Restart the TikTok app and your device.
  2. Update TikTok and your phone's operating system to the latest versions.
  3. Check your internet connection, and try switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
  4. Clear the cache: tap Profile, tap the Menu button at the top, select Settings and privacy, tap Free up space, then tap Clear next to Cache.

TikTok also tests features with a limited number of users, so some new features or changes may not be available on your account yet. If you still can't save, contact support from Settings and privacy, Help Center, Chat with us.

Name vs. username: change the one you mean

Your TikTok account has two separate names, and people often change the wrong one.

If you only want a different display name, change the name instead. It changes more often, and it doesn't touch your profile link. Nicknames also have to follow TikTok's Community Guidelines.

What changes when you switch

Your username makes up your profile link, which looks like tiktok.com/@username. TikTok says that changing your username also changes your profile link, so tiktok.com/@oldname becomes tiktok.com/@newname.

TikTok's help pages don't say whether the old link forwards to the new one, so plan as if it doesn't. Any link to your old @ in bios, on your website or in old posts on other platforms should be treated as out of date.

What to update afterwards

Work through this list the day you change it.

  1. Your own bio. If your TikTok bio mentions your handle, a second account or a sign-off with the old @, fix it. Bios can be up to 80 characters, and our guide on how to change your bio on TikTok walks through it.
  2. Links that point to your TikTok. Instagram bio, YouTube channel, website, email signature, media kit, shop pages and any link page. Replace tiktok.com/@oldname with the new link.
  3. QR codes. Any QR code you generated from your old profile link still encodes that old link. Make a new one before you print anything.
  4. Brands and collaborators. Send your new @ so tags and mentions in future posts point to the right account.
  5. Other accounts that mention your TikTok. A line like "more on TikTok @oldname" in an Instagram or YouTube bio is easy to miss.

If the name change is part of a rebrand, it is a good moment to refresh the bio itself. Our list of TikTok bio ideas has examples for creators and businesses.

Change your handle once, not in ten places

The list above gets long because your TikTok link ends up everywhere. A link page means the places that share your link don't need to change when your handle does.

Olaa gives you one short link, olaa.im/yourname, to put in your TikTok bio and everywhere else. The page holds your links and social icons, so after a TikTok username change you edit your TikTok icon once on your Olaa page, and every bio, card and QR code that points to olaa.im/yourname stays correct. The free plan includes one page, unlimited links and a QR code, and setup takes a few minutes with no code. There is more on our Olaa for TikTok page. For adding any link to your profile, see our guide to the TikTok bio link.

FAQ

How often can you change your TikTok username?

Once every 30 days, according to TikTok. Your name (nickname) is separate and can be changed once every 7 days.

Why can't I change my TikTok username?

The most common reasons are that you changed it within the last 30 days, the name is taken or held by a suspended or deactivated account, or it breaks the rules: 2 to 24 characters, only letters, numbers, underscores and periods, and no period at the end. You also can't change it while you are blocked from updating your profile. If none of those apply, TikTok suggests restarting the app, updating it, and clearing your cache.

Can I go back to my old TikTok username?

Not right away. TikTok says a username you give up can't be added to an account for a short period of time, and you will also need to wait out the 30 days since your last change.

Does changing your TikTok username lose followers?

TikTok's username help page doesn't mention followers at all. What it does say changes is your @ and your profile link, so the real risk is people clicking an old link, which is why updating your links matters.

Can I change my TikTok username on my phone's browser?

No. TikTok says the web option isn't available on TikTok Mobile Web. Use the TikTok app on your phone, or tiktok.com on a computer.
