To change your bio on TikTok, go to your profile, tap Edit profile, tap Bio, type your new bio and tap Save. It works the same way on tiktok.com in a computer browser. Keep it to 80 characters, which is TikTok's limit for bios.

Change your bio in the TikTok app

Every profile change in the TikTok app starts from the same screen.

  1. Open TikTok and tap Profile at the bottom.
  2. Tap Edit profile.
  3. Tap Bio. If you haven't written one yet, the field may say "No bio yet".
  4. Type your new bio.
  5. Tap Save in the top right corner.

You can come back to the same screen any time to edit it again.

Change your bio on a computer

TikTok's help center lists these steps for the website:

  1. Go to tiktok.com and log in.
  2. Click your profile picture in the upper corner.
  3. Select View Profile to open your profile page.
  4. Click Edit profile.
  5. Click Bio.
  6. Enter the new bio.
  7. Click Save.

One catch: TikTok says this isn't available on TikTok Mobile Web, meaning tiktok.com opened in a phone's browser. On a phone, use the app. The full steps are on TikTok's Changing account bio page.

Bio, name and username: limits that matter

Your profile has three text fields, and each has its own rules. Mixing them up can make an edit seem to fail.

FieldWhat it isLimitHow often you can change it
BioThe text under your name80 charactersNo limit stated by TikTok
Name (nickname)Your nickname30 charactersOnce every 7 days
UsernameYour @handle, which makes up your profile link2 to 24 charactersOnce every 30 days

To change your name in the app: tap Profile, Edit profile, Name, enter up to 30 characters and tap Save. Names must follow TikTok's Community Guidelines.

To change your username in the app: tap Profile, Edit profile, Username, enter the new name and tap Save. TikTok's rules for usernames:

  • Only letters, numbers, underscores and periods, and a period can't be the last character.
  • Changing it also changes your profile link, so update anywhere you've shared the old one.
  • If you give up a username, you can't add it to an account again for a short period.
  • You can't pick one that's unavailable, such as a username already taken or claimed by a suspended or deactivated account.
  • You can't change it if you're blocked from updating your profile.

The Links field sits on the same Edit profile screen, but not everyone has it. TikTok lets you add a website link to your profile if you have at least 1,000 followers, or a Verified Business Account.

  1. In the TikTok app, tap Profile.
  2. Tap Edit profile.
  3. Next to Links, tap Add.
  4. Follow the steps to add your website.

TikTok no longer supports links that open or log you into other social media apps. You can still link to those platforms' websites. Links open in TikTok's in-app browser, and TikTok may ask people to open some pages in their phone's browser instead. Our full guide to adding a link to your TikTok bio covers the requirements in detail, and if you mainly want to send people to Instagram, see how to add your Instagram link to TikTok.

When your TikTok bio won't save

If you tap Save and nothing changes, work through these in order.

  1. Check the length. Bios can't go over 80 characters. Cut it down and try again.
  2. Check which field you're editing. If the change you want is to your name or @username, those have their own limits: a name can change once every 7 days and a username once every 30 days.
  3. Switch from your phone's browser to the app. Editing your bio isn't available on TikTok Mobile Web. Use the app, or tiktok.com on a computer.
  4. Restart TikTok and your phone. TikTok lists this among its troubleshooting steps for app problems.
  5. Update the app. Make sure you're on the latest version of TikTok and your phone's operating system.
  6. Check your connection. Weak Wi-Fi or data can cause problems; try switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
  7. Clear the cache. Tap Profile, tap the Menu button at the top, select Settings and privacy, tap Free up space, then tap Clear next to Cache and Clear again to confirm.

If it still won't save, report it. In the app, tap Profile, tap the Menu button, tap Settings and privacy, then Report a problem. You can also tap Need more help? at the bottom of a TikTok help article to submit a ticket.

TikTok also says it tests new features with a limited number of users, so some new options may not be available on your account yet.

Write a bio that does a job

Eighty characters is short, so every word should help someone decide to follow or tap. A simple pattern: who you are, what you post, and what to do next. For example, "Ceramics from a tiny Austin studio. New drops Fridays. Shop below." That is 66 characters.

If you can add a link, end the bio by pointing to it. If you can't yet, say where to find you, such as your Instagram handle, until you reach 1,000 followers. For more examples by niche, see our TikTok bio ideas.

If you can add a link, it helps if that link leads to everything. Olaa is a link in bio tool: you put olaa.im/yourname in your TikTok bio and it opens a page with all your links. The free plan includes unlimited links, social icons, featured cards, and music and video players that play right on the page, including TikTok, YouTube, Spotify and Apple Music. Setup takes a few minutes and needs no code. If you sell, Olaa Pro ($8 a month or $72 a year) adds products from Stripe, Etsy, Shopify or Gumroad with checkout in your own shop. See Olaa for TikTok or what's included.

FAQ

How many characters can a TikTok bio have?

80 characters. TikTok's help center says bios cannot exceed 80 characters, so plan a short line and use the link, if you have one, for the rest.

Can I change my TikTok bio on a computer?

Yes. On tiktok.com, click your profile picture, select View Profile, click Edit profile, then Bio, and click Save. It isn't available on TikTok Mobile Web, so on a phone use the app.

Why can't I change my TikTok name or username?

TikTok limits how often you can change them: your name once every 7 days and your username once every 30 days. A username also can't be one that's unavailable, and you can't change it if you're blocked from updating your profile.

Why don't I see the Links option on my TikTok profile?

TikTok only lets you add a website link if you have at least 1,000 followers or a Verified Business Account. Until then, you can't add a website link to your profile.

Does changing my TikTok username change my profile link?

Yes. Your username is the @tag that makes up your profile link, so TikTok says changing your username also changes your profile link. Update the link anywhere you've shared it.
