To edit your Instagram bio, go to your profile, tap Edit profile, tap Bio, type up to 150 characters and tap Done. On instagram.com it is the same idea: click Edit profile, click the box next to Bio, and click Submit. Links and pronouns are different: they can only be changed in the iPhone or Android app.

Edit your bio in the app

The steps are the same whether you are writing a bio for the first time or changing an old one.

  1. Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right to go to your profile.
  2. Tap Edit profile at the top of the screen.
  3. Tap Bio, then write your bio.
  4. Tap Done on iPhone, or tap the save icon on Android.

Your bio can be up to 150 characters, and anyone can see it. If you are stuck on what to write, our Instagram bio ideas give you a simple formula and examples by niche.

You can add up to 5 websites to your profile, and anyone, on or off Instagram, can see them. Instagram's help center says adding websites isn't available on computers, so use the app.

To add a link:

  1. Go to your profile and tap Edit profile.
  2. Tap Links.
  3. Tap Add external link (iPhone) or Add link (Android), and enter the URL.
  4. Tap Done, then tap Back.

To remove a link, open Edit profile, tap Links, tap the link and tap Remove link.

To reorder links:

  1. Go to your profile, tap Edit profile, then tap Links.
  2. Tap Options, then tap Reorder links.
  3. Tap and hold a link and drag it up or down the list.
  4. Tap Done (iPhone) or Accept (Android), then tap Back.

The first link is the one to make count. For a deeper walkthrough, see how to add a link to your Instagram bio.

Change your name, username and pronouns

Name and username. The quickest way is Edit profile: tap your profile, tap Edit profile, type your new name or username and tap Done. You can also do it through Accounts Center:

  1. Go to your profile and tap Menu.
  2. Tap Accounts Center, then tap Profiles.
  3. Tap the profile you want to update.
  4. Choose name or username and make the change.

On a computer, click More, click Settings, click See more in Accounts Center, then click Profiles. Some people see Meta Account settings instead of Accounts Center, and not everyone can reach this setting there yet.

A few rules for usernames, from Instagram's help center:

  • If your account reaches a lot of people, a username change may need to be reviewed. You'll be notified when the review is done. Otherwise it changes right away if the name is available.
  • Your followers may be notified that you changed it.
  • In most cases you can switch back to a username you used before, as long as nobody else has taken it and it hasn't been recently removed from an active account you don't own.

The one name change limit Instagram's help center spells out is for Meta Verified creators: they can update their profile name twice every 14 days, and a change can sit in review for up to 3 days, during which further edits may be blocked.

Pronouns. Pronouns aren't available to everyone, and they can't be edited on a computer.

  1. Go to your profile, tap Edit profile, then tap Pronouns.
  2. Type your pronouns and pick them from the results. You can add up to four. Tap Remove beside one to delete it.
  3. Turn on Show to followers only if you want only followers to see them. It is on by default for people under 18.
  4. Tap Done in the top right.

If your pronouns aren't offered, add them to your bio.

Change or hide your category label

Category labels appear on professional (Business or Creator) accounts. You need a professional account to edit them.

  1. Go to your profile and tap Edit profile.
  2. Under Public business information, tap Business category to change it. Contact info lives here too.
  3. To hide or show the label, tap Profile display under Public business information and choose.
  4. Save your change.

Fix it when your edits won't save

Instagram's help center says a save error can mean you entered something that isn't allowed, like certain characters or links that ask someone to add you on another service. Remove that part, edit your profile and save again.

If it still won't save, work through Instagram's standard fixes in order:

  1. Update the Instagram app and your phone's operating system to the latest versions.
  2. Restart your phone.
  3. Try on Wi-Fi and then on mobile data, in case one connection is weak.
  4. Delete and reinstall the app, then log back in. Your profile info is saved by Instagram.

If a name change is refused and you are Meta Verified, check whether you have hit the twice-in-14-days limit or have a change still in review. If a field is missing altogether, the feature may not be available to everyone yet, which Instagram says is true of pronouns and the Accounts Center profile setting.

Point your bio to one page with Olaa

Once your bio is right, the link under it is the next thing people tap. Olaa gives you one short link, olaa.im/yourname, that opens a page with everything you want people to find: links, music and video players, bookings and a QR code on the free plan. You put it in your Instagram bio like any other link, and setup takes a few minutes with no code. See how Olaa works for Instagram or compare plans.

FAQ

Why can't I add a link to my Instagram bio on my computer?

Instagram doesn't offer adding websites on computers. Open the iPhone or Android app, go to Edit profile, tap Links and add up to 5 websites there.

How many times can I change my Instagram name?

Instagram's help center gives a fixed limit only for Meta Verified creators: twice every 14 days. For everyone else it lists no fixed number, but if the app refuses a change, wait and try again later.

Will my followers know I changed my bio or username?

Your followers may be notified when you change your username. Your bio itself is public, so anyone who visits your profile sees the new version.

How do I create a bio on Instagram for the first time?

Follow the same steps as editing: go to your profile, tap Edit profile, tap Bio, write up to 150 characters and tap Done. If you want a starting point, use one line each for who you are, what you offer, a specific detail and what your link does.

Why don't I see the Pronouns option?

Instagram says pronouns aren't available to everyone yet, and they can't be added from a computer. If you don't see the option in the app, or your pronouns aren't listed, write them in your bio instead.
