How to Repost on Instagram: Posts, Reels and Stories
Repost a post or reel with Instagram's Repost button, share posts and stories to your story, and co-author with Collabs, with credit done right.
· 6 min read

To repost on Instagram, open a public post or reel in the app and tap Repost. It lands in a Reposts tab on your profile, and your followers may see it in their feeds. If you'd rather put it in your story, tap Share, then Add to story.
Those are the two everyday options. There are two more: resharing a story you were mentioned in, and Collabs, where you co-author one post with another account. Here is each one, plus what to do when the button isn't there.
Use the Repost button for posts and reels
Instagram now has a built-in Repost feature for public posts and reels. It works in the iPhone, Android and iPad apps. It isn't available on a computer, and Instagram says it may not have reached every account yet.
- Open the Instagram app.
- On the public post or reel you want to share, tap Repost.
- To add a note, tap the bubble by your profile picture at the bottom left of the post or reel.
- Type your text and tap Save.
The repost shows up in the Reposts tab on your profile. When people comment on your repost, those comments come to you as direct messages.
A few limits:
- You can only repost content from a public account whose owner allows reposts.
- Only the original post can be reposted. You can't repost a repost.
- To undo one, tap Repost again on the same post or reel.
- To clear out several at once, go to your profile, tap Menu in the top right, then Your activity, then Reposts. Select the ones you want gone and tap Delete.
Share a post or reel to your story
Sharing to your story puts the post on your story with a link back to the original account, so anyone who views it can see who posted it and tap through to their profile.
- Tap Share below the photo or video in Feed.
- Tap Add to story.
- Tap Next in the bottom right.
- Tap Share.
This only works if the account is public and its owner allows resharing. Instagram says sharing from Feed to Stories isn't available to everyone. If you want people to tap a link on top of the shared post, add a link sticker, as covered in our guide to adding a link to an Instagram story.
Reshare someone's story, including one you're mentioned in
You can share another person's story to your own story if their account is public. Your account can be public or private.
- Tap Share in the bottom right of the story.
- Tap Add to story.
- Tap Next in the bottom right.
- Tap Share.
When someone mentions you in their story, you get a notification and a direct message with a preview of the story. If you don't follow them, it arrives as a message request. The preview disappears from the chat after 24 hours, so reshare it while it's there.
If the Add to story option is missing, these are the usual reasons:
| What you see | Why |
|---|---|
| No option on a story | The account is private, or the owner turned off story resharing |
| No option on a story you're mentioned in | The person turned off reshares for people they mention |
| No option on a feed post | The account is private or doesn't allow resharing |
| No Repost button | The creator turned off reposts, or the feature hasn't reached your account |
Mentions also don't land on your profile or in your tagged photos, and a story disappears after 24 hours unless the owner adds it to a highlight.
Co-author a post with Collabs
A Collab isn't a repost. It's one post with two or more authors. When the other account accepts, their username is added to the post, it's shared with their followers, and it shows on their profile. A tag or mention doesn't do that, so use a Collab when you made something together and you both want it on your grid.
To invite someone to a post you're creating:
- Before you publish, tap Tag people.
- Tap Invite collaborator.
- Search for the account and tap it.
- Tap Done.
The other person gets the invite in their messages. They open the chat, tap the collaboration invite, tap Review, then tap Accept.
Good to know:
- You can add up to 5 collaborators to a post.
- Public accounts can invite public or private accounts. Private accounts can only invite accounts that follow them.
- You can't add collaborators to stories.
- Only the original creator can delete the post.
- Collab posts can't be scheduled with Instagram's scheduler, so publish them live.
Collabs work well alongside links in your caption and bio. Our guide to links in Instagram posts covers what you can and can't make clickable.
Credit the creator and ask first
Story shares carry the original account with them. Even so, good manners go further than the minimum.
- Ask before you repost work that isn't yours, especially photos of people, art, or anything you'd use to sell. A quick DM is enough, and most creators are glad to be asked.
- Name them in your note or caption. Tag their @username so your followers can find them.
- Don't download and re-upload. Use Repost or Share instead.
- Respect a "no". If someone has turned reposts or resharing off, that's their answer. Ask them directly instead of working around it.
On your own account, you decide who can reuse your work. Go to your profile, tap Menu, then Sharing and reuse. From there you can turn Reposts on posts and reels on or off, turn Posts and reels to stories on or off, and set Stories to stories to Everyone, Followers you follow back, or Off.
Send reposted traffic somewhere useful with Olaa
When someone reposts or shares your work, the people who tap through land on your profile, and your bio link is the one place they can go next. Olaa gives you one short link, olaa.im/yourname, that opens a page with everything you want people to find: your links, a music or video player that plays on the page, a booking calendar, social icons.
The free plan includes one page with unlimited links and 7 days of analytics, so you can see whether a big repost actually sent people your way. Setup takes a few minutes and needs no code. If you're new to bio links, start with how to add a link to your Instagram bio.
FAQ
Does Instagram have a repost button?
Yes. Public posts and reels have a Repost button in the Instagram app, and your reposts collect in a Reposts tab on your profile. Instagram says the feature may not be available to everyone yet, and it doesn't work on a computer.
How do I repost a reel on Instagram?
Open the reel and tap Repost. To add a note, tap the bubble by your profile picture, type it and tap Save. To put the reel on your story instead, tap Share, then Add to story.
Why can't I share a post to my story?
The account is either private or has turned off resharing of its posts. Instagram also says Feed to Stories sharing isn't available to everyone. There's nothing to change on your side, so ask the creator if you'd like to share it.
Will the original creator know I reposted?
Your repost shows on your profile and your followers may see it. For shares to stories, Instagram says creators can't see who reshared their reel or where. If credit matters to you or to them, tag them.
Can I repost something someone else already reposted?
No. Only the original post or reel can be reposted, not a repost of it. Find the original account's post and repost that one.
How do I stop people from reposting my content?
Go to your profile, tap Menu, then Sharing and reuse, and turn off Reposts on posts and reels. In the same place you can turn off Posts and reels to stories and set Stories to stories to Off.
