You can't see who viewed your Instagram profile. Instagram has no list of profile visitors for any account type: the only place it shows you viewers by username is your story. What you can see is how many people found you and what they did next, through insights on any public account.

Here is exactly what Instagram shows, where to find it, and how to make the most of the people who do visit.

Instagram shows story viewers, not profile visitors

Instagram's help center covers insights, privacy, visibility and story viewers in detail, and none of it describes a way to see which accounts opened your profile. Visiting a profile leaves no name behind. Watching a story does: when you view someone's story, they can tell you've seen it.

So the real answer to "can you see who views your Instagram" splits in two:

What someone didCan you see who it was?
Opened your profileNo
Watched your storyYes, by username, for 48 hours
Liked or commented on your postYes, in Activity
Viewed a post or reelNo list documented, only totals in insights

If you came here hoping for a list of everyone who checked you out, that list doesn't exist inside Instagram.

See who watched your story

Story viewers are the closest thing Instagram offers to a visitor list, and it's private to you. Only you can see who's seen your story.

  1. Open your story.
  2. Swipe up on the screen.
  3. You'll see the number of views and the usernames of the people who viewed each photo or video. If you also shared the story to Facebook, scroll down to see who saw it there.

Stories disappear from Feed, your profile and Direct after 24 hours unless you add them to a highlight, but the viewer list lasts a little longer. You can check it for up to 48 hours after posting:

  1. Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right.
  2. Tap Menu in the top right.
  3. Below How you use Instagram, tap Archive.
  4. Scroll to the story, tap it, then swipe up.

Two details explain most "the numbers don't match" moments. The view count includes replays, so one person who watched three times can make the count higher than the list of names. And the viewer list and view count leave out Instagram Plus subscribers who previewed your story. The full rules are on Instagram's story viewers page.

Use insights to count profile activity

Insights won't name anyone, but they tell you how many people saw your content and how many went on to your profile. You need a public account to use them, personal or professional. If you switch to private, you lose access; switch back to public within 90 days and your past data returns.

To open your insights in the app:

  1. Go to your profile.
  2. Tap Professional dashboard if you have a professional account, or Your dashboard if you have a personal one.
  3. If you don't see it, tap More to go to Settings and activity, then tap Insights below For professionals, or Your dashboard below Your insights and tools.

The overview shows Views, Interactions, New followers and Content you shared, for timeframes within the past 90 days: Last 7 days, Last 14 days, Last 30 days, Previous month, Last 90 days, or a custom range within the past 90 days.

The metrics closest to "profile visitors" are these, in Instagram's own definitions:

  • Profile activity on a post: the number of actions people take when they visit your profile after engaging with that post. Open the post and tap View Insights.
  • Profile activity on a story: actions taken from your story, such as profile visits, follows or website clicks. Story insights stay available for up to two years, even though the story itself expires.
  • Follows on a reel: how many accounts started following you as a result of viewing that reel.
  • Viewers: the number of unique accounts that saw your content on screen at least once, with demographics like top countries, cities, age ranges and gender.

A few thresholds apply. Audience demographics need a preset timeframe and more than 100 accounts reached or engaged, and follower trends need at least 100 followers. Instagram labels its viewer and accounts engaged numbers as estimated and in development, so treat them as a trend rather than an exact count.

One help page still says insights are only for businesses and highly engaged accounts, but Instagram's newer insights pages say any public personal or professional account can view them. If you want extras like boosting posts, that does need a professional account; our guide to switching to an Instagram business account walks through it.

Be careful with apps that promise a visitor list

Instagram's help center says to be careful before giving third party apps or websites access to your Instagram account, and never to share your login with any person or app you don't trust. Anything that asks for your password in exchange for a list of profile visitors falls squarely in that warning. Instagram's third party apps page explains how to review and remove apps you've already connected.

Make every profile visit count

Since you can't see who's visiting, put the effort into what they find. Some of your profile is always public, even on a private account: your name, username, profile picture, bio, links, and follower and following counts. Anyone who taps through from a reel, a comment or a search sees those first.

A few things decide whether a visit turns into a follow or a click:

  • A bio that says what you do. One line on who you are and one on what you offer beats a list of emojis. Our Instagram bio ideas has examples by niche.
  • A link that goes somewhere useful. If you have more than one thing to share (a shop, a booking page, your latest video), a single bio link to a page that holds them all works better than swapping links every week. Our guide to adding a link to your Instagram bio covers the steps.
  • Highlights that answer the obvious questions. Since stories vanish after 24 hours, highlights are where new visitors see prices, reviews or your best work.
  • Watch profile activity after each post. If one post sends far more people to your profile than the rest, make more like it.

If you also post on TikTok, our guide to TikTok profile views covers what that app shows.

This is where Olaa fits. Olaa is a link in bio tool: you get one short link, olaa.im/yourname, that opens a page with everything you want visitors to find. You put that link in your Instagram bio, and anyone who lands on your profile is one tap from your links, music and video players that play on the page, Calendly bookings or Google Forms, all on the free plan.

Setting it up takes a few minutes and needs no code. The free plan includes 7 days of analytics, so alongside Instagram's profile activity you can see what visitors do once they leave Instagram. Olaa Pro ($8 a month or $72 a year) adds 30 and 90 day analytics, products from Stripe, Etsy, Shopify or Gumroad, and email signups sent to Mailchimp. FAQ

Can people see if I look at their Instagram profile?

No. Instagram doesn't show anyone a list of who visited their profile. Stories are the exception: if you watch someone's story, your username appears in their viewer list for up to 48 hours after they post it.

Can I see who viewed my Instagram story after 24 hours?

Yes, for up to 48 hours after you post it. Go to your profile, tap Menu, tap Archive below How you use Instagram, open the story and swipe up. After 48 hours, only the totals remain in your story insights.

Do business accounts see who visited their profile?

No. Business and creator accounts get the same kind of insights as public personal accounts: counts like profile activity, viewers and follows, never names. A professional account adds tools like boosting, not a visitor list.

Why does my story have more views than names?

The view count includes replays, so someone who watched twice counts twice but appears once in the list. The list and count also leave out Instagram Plus subscribers who previewed your story.

Why can't I see insights on my account?

Insights need a public account. If your account is private, switch it to public and they'll appear; past data can come back if you switch within 90 days of going private. Demographic breakdowns also need more than 100 accounts reached or engaged.
